Don't Miss the Importance of the Polio Vaccine

Vaccination is important to prevent dangerous diseases in infants and children. In Indonesia, one of the vaccines that must be given by infants and children is the polio vaccine. Polio vaccine aims to avoid polio or poliomyelitis which attacks the nerve. The virus that causes polio infection lives in the throat and intestinal tract which can be spread by contact with fluids or feces. Polio can cause paralysis of body organs, even death.

Giving on Schedule

There are two types of polio vaccine namely oral polio vaccine or oral polio vaccine (OPV), and inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) vaccine. OPV contains live polio virus which is attenuated so that the body has resistance to the polio virus that attacks. Meanwhile, IPV uses viruses that are no longer active. The administration of OPV type polio vaccine is dripped by mouth. Meanwhile, this type of IPV is given by injection in the arm or leg. To obtain optimal results, the polio vaccine will usually be given since the baby is born. After that, the vaccine will be given again at the age of 2 months, 3 months and 4 months. Then, one more dose of the polio booster vaccine will be given when the child is 18 years old. If the administration of polio vaccine to infants or children is delayed, it can be continued until the full dose. Remember, the polio vaccine does not need to be repeated from the start. If after the polio vaccine, the child has pain or fever, consult a doctor about administering pain medications, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. Especially for the IPV type polio vaccine, the administration of this vaccine can cause painful red spots at the injection site. As with drugs in general, the polio vaccine also has a risk of triggering allergies and other risks that are classified as very small. It is recommended to postpone the polio vaccine when the child's condition is not fit or sick. In cases of vaccinations that cause allergies, polio vaccine may not be re-administered. In children who are known to have severe allergies to neomycin, streptomycin and polymyxin B, it may not be recommended to get an injection of polio vaccine.

Polio Vaccine for Adults

Polio can strike at any age. If there is an adult who has never received a polio vaccine, he can get three doses of polio vaccine with a gap between the first and second doses around 1-2 months. Then, the distance of the second and third doses between 6-12 months In addition, there are three groups of adults who need a polio vaccine because of the high risk of contact with the polio virus. First, adults who frequently travel to areas that are known to have many cases of polio. Second, laboratory workers who handle specimens that may contain the polio virus. Third, health workers who take care of patients infected with polio. For adults in that category, it is recommended to consult a doctor about the possibility of obtaining an additional polio vaccine. Polio is classified as a dangerous disease that can cause paralysis to death. Avoid the risk of being infected with a dangerous polio virus by vaccination. Keep the polio vaccine schedule according to the doctor's advice.
